The guide EURACHEM/CITAC has its origin in the recognised need to integrate the main theories in the ISO Guide with practical examples of their application in the field of chemical measurements, especially with regard to the modalities for the estimate of uncertainty applicable in Laboratories in which a an efficient QMS is operative.
The guide provides detailed indications for the assessment and expression of uncertainty in quantitative chemical analysis based on the approach adopted in the ISO "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement".
These indications are applicable for all levels of precision and in all routine fields of analysis for basic research and empirical and rational methods.
Some typical areas requiring chemical measurements and to which the principles of this guide can be applied are:
• quality control and quality guarantee in the manufacturing sector;
• required tests for conformity assessment against standards, laws or regulations;
• tests carried out using an agreed method;
• calibration of samples and equipment;
• measures associated with development and certification of reference materials;
• research and development.
The scope of the guide is to cover a selection of concepts contained in the International Dictionary of Metrology.
The guide is intended for laboratory personnel, for certification and accreditation bodies, for those who commission measurements and for those who utilise the results of measurements. Teachers and trainers may also find it useful in metrology instruction.
It is possible to consult documents in the RCBH website in the sections:
• Documenti - Laboratori di prova - Guide di applicazione (Documents - Testing Laboratories - guide to application)
• Documenti - Laboratori di prova per la sicurezza degli alimenti - Guide di applicazione (Testing Laboratories for Food Safety - guide to application)
